New Culture: Luria Empty New Culture: Luria

The Lurian Hills hug the coastline beneath the western extremity of the Helikon mountains. Their sturdy hillfarmers claim descent from refugees from the Lost City of Ilon, which burned in the fires of the last Autarch wars.

The lurian hill cities of Alba and Massala are ruled by small elites of nobles, but most Lurians are simple farmers. They are locked in vicious conflict with barbarian tribes descending from the wild mountains. The conflicts with these outsiders, as well as the neighbouring Toscan tribes have created many doughty lurian skirmrishers, proficient with javelin and shield. The Toscans and the Lurians used to belong to the same people, but incessant family feuding led to a split between the two tribes, and now they are bitter enemies. The king of Massala used to be a toscan, but was expelled by the cities nobility, which now rules supreme. The king of Alba was also displaced by the nobility, and lives in exiled devotion to Demeter in a holy olive grove.

The societies of the two cities of Alba and Massala are split between the Patricians, or the noble class, and the Rabble. Since the liberation of Massala from its Toscan king, the Patricians has ruled both cities with an iron hand. Smaller hilltop towns are ruled by simple chiefs or heads of family without Patrician standing.

The Sibylla of the Lurians is a powerful recluse Sorceress whose words of wisdom and warning guides the Lurian tribes. The fledging cities of Alba and Massala vie for her favor. Even the remote Toscans treck to her hermits cave.

The Lurian nobility venerate the Olympic gods, but some of the baser classes worship Nymphs, which invites interesting situations if any such characters are found in the group.

It is intended as local colour, but also as an attempt to incorporate an early republican, almost etruscan quasi-rome (with quasi-etruscan neighbours. Might include terracotta golems there).

How does Ilon float? Does the setting require a quasi-troy? It's ripe with setting ideas (ancient cults of Apollo or the Dark Mother Kybele surviving among the ruins of razed Ilon. The mad Archon-King Pergamoms Ghost, the Mechanical Horse that eventually jumped the walls of Ilon to rain fiery death over its blasphemous citizens.. etc etc)
